10 Hated Video Game Sequels You Should Play

5. Doom 3

Doom 3 owns.

A departure from the previous two lightning-fast FPS classics, this third game slows the pace down and encourages players to drink in the atmosphere. Though still a gory, violent experience, Doom 3 is more about darkly lit corridor-crawling, wondering where the next demon or zombie is going to jump out from.

That change in direction is what makes it particularly interesting to revisit today. There's nothing else like it in this franchise, and with it re-telling the story of the original Doom, the sequel feels like a strange, alternate reality version of a game that defined a generation.

It helps that the engine still holds up incredibly well decades later, with striking lighting, convincing monster designs and weighty combat adding to the immersion. The environments steal the show too, eventually getting more blood-soaked, surreal and metal as you head into Hell itself.

It feels a bit trite to say 'they don't make these types of games today', but a title like Doom 3 really is unlikely to be made in 2022 on this scale, and as such is always primed for a revisit.
