10 Hauntingly Dark Secrets In RPGs

8. A Little Too Late - Fallout 4

There are lots of haunting little details in the Fallout series which makes sense since it’s certainly one of the champions of environmental storytelling.

Attentive players in Fallout 4 could happen across a building with a ramp on one side and another tall building across the street, below which you can see a pile of bodies belonging to those who attempted and failed the jump. Every game in the series is littered with these grim instances, particularly when you get into the least fun version of video game vault hunting. But let's talk about the Miller family radio signal. This is a station that can be picked up once you’ve extended the satellites. It blasts out a distress call from someone trapped inside a tipped train car with their family, running out of oxygen due to a busted generator outside.

It turns out the hatch is vacuum sealed so they need help, and quickly.

When you arrive and crack the hatch feeling like a darn hero, you realise the family inside suffocated long ago, but that recorded message running back over and over made you feel like if you just made it there in time you could help. Finding the skeletons clutching one another inside stings significantly more than it otherwise would because we actually had hope.
