For those who haven't played Fallout 3, the main questline revolves around tracking down your father after he abandons you in a underground nuclear bunker run by a psychopath. To find him, you'll have fight off bandits and mutated creatures, get involved in conflicts and generally risk your life at almost every moment. When you do find your father, there's barely any time for answers as you have to help him save the entire Capital Wasteland.

Despite only getting to spend around 30 minutes with your dad before he runs off, the game does a pretty great job at making you feel attached to him. You want to find him, despite the fact he has just disappeared with no explanation. With all this in mind, the writers decided that no matter your actions, your father had to die for the game's story to progress.

As you work to try return fresh water to the wasteland, your dad has to make a sacrifice to stop the Enclave and floods a chamber with radiation. While an incredibly heroic act, it's pretty sad for the player as they have to watch as their dad slowly succumb to the radiation poisoning.
