This one still hurts and it happened over 20 years ago.

Aerith's death in Final Fantasy VII is one of the best plot twists seen in any RPG. Not only was it unexpected, but it had a huge impact because not only was she a central character to the story, but she was a part of your party.

Once she's gone you feel her absence as you have to change your approach to combat as you can't rely on her moves. The story affects the gameplay, making it that much more difficult to accept.

For years and years fans were sure there had to be a way to save Aerith. Apart from breaking the game, there is nothing you can do to stop Sephiroth from killing Aerith. She has to die, and the player has to continue without her. This death was even revisited with the recent remaster that released just this year, putting players through the same agony again.

Aerith's death showed that characters could die in games, and if used correctly it could really push the narrative forward in interesting ways. But that doesn't make it any easier for fans to accept.
