10 Heartbreaking Video Game Deaths You Were Powerless To Stop

4. John Marston - Red Dead Redemption

While it was extremely close between John Marston and Arthur Morgan, John's death is just that little bit more bittersweet than Arthur's. While Arthur's death is devastating in its own right, it did feel like he found closure in his final actions and was finally getting rest from his long turbulent life as an outlaw. This isn't the case with John - rather, it's quite the opposite.

The events of Red Dead Redemption see John Marston hunt down old members from his gang for the US government so that he can be reunited with his own family and finally live life as a lawful man. But John never stood a chance and was never going to escape his fate, and by the end of the game he comes to realise this. He was just so close to getting that life he always wanted.

Anyone who has played the game remembers when they were forced to walk through those barn doors and make their final stand. Seeing John riddled with bullets is such an upsetting image to have to see, but at least you can find some comfort in the fact that his son, Jack, is able to avenge his father years later.
