10 Hidden Mechanics That Totally Change Video Games
5. The Last Hit Point - Doom
Doom is one of those classic series that lives up to its motto with every new release. The funny thing is, it's not just the powerful weapons and bloody finishers that make you want to "rip and tear"; there are hidden mechanics meant to keep you fighting the demon hordes, no matter the challenge.
As it turns out, the game's health system utilizes a neat little trick, which makes it so that your last hit point is actually worth more than the rest.
This means that when you're down to your last peg of health, you actually can't be one-shot by demons, and can survive the fight for much longer than expected.
Thankfully this is not a bug, as many other games, such as Uncharted and Assassin's Creed, have used a similar system for their health points too, the intention being to make a player's last stand against enemies feel more meaningful (as opposed to it ending with an immediate death via a stray bullet).
Knowing this, you can completely change your mentality when playing Doom, and instead of cowering in the corner, looking for a way to replenish your health. You can then go back in, guns blazing.
