10 Hidden Mechanics That Totally Change Video Games

4. Dodge Offset - Bayonetta

Dodge Offset is a technique that allows the player to maintain their combo after they dodge an attack.

It's actually fairly simple to pull off, although it can get a bit tricky to master. If you don't want to lose your monster combo when the enemy attacks you, all you need to do is hold down your kick or punch button as you dodge, then when you release the latter button afterwards, your combo is preserved.

Dodge Offset ties really well with Bayonetta's fast and skill-based gameplay, as even though it is easy to do, it can become somewhat challenging to time it right, when you start juggling between so many attacks, abilities and enemy patterns.

The interesting thing is that this mechanic has also been suck into other titles made by Platinum Games. For example, the criminally overlooked Astral Chain includes a technique similar to Bayonetta's Dodge Offset, but this one is tucked away inside the game's HELP menu.
