10 Hidden Playable Video Game Characters You Totally Missed
1. Akuma - Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Developers make changes to fighting games all the time. Balance tweaks, animation tweaks, etc. are frequently refined over numerous patches. But back in Street Fighter II's day, you needed a whole new game to make those kinds of changes. And with its third and final release, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, we also got the granddaddy of all secret unlockable characters: Akuma.
An evil counterpart to Ryu and Ken, you'll most likely first encounter Akuma as a secret boss. Assuming you're any good, that is, as fighting him requires you to win every match without blocking even once and finish with the high score. At that point Akuma will enter the arena, smoke usual boss M. Bison, and then probably smoke you too. Because he's really hard.
Fortunately, you don't need to fight him to unlock his (much weaker) playable version. All you have to do is go to the character select screen and highlight each of the following characters for three seconds, in this order: Ryu, T. Hawk, Guile, Cammy, Ryu - then hit Start and all three punch buttons simultaneously.
So easy that if you put a chimp at an arcade cabinet for eternity, he'd probably figure it out. Eventually.
