10 Hidden PS3 Gems You Should Track Down

9. Resonance Of Fate (2010)

Enslaved odyssey to the west

Resonance of Fate is a Japanese role-playing game that dared to try something different by taking a subversive approach to turn-based combat.

Final Fantasy-style battles aren't for everyone. Some people find them about as much fun as compiling a Powerpoint presentation, and have thus shunned the entire RPG genre, but Resonance of Fate challenged their preconceptions with a faster-paced system coupled with Matrix-esque cinematography.

Developer tri-Ace placed a turn-based system at the core of all of this, with an emphasis on strategy and teamwork, but once your team was in position and shots were fired, players could sit back and marvel at the spectacle on show.

Outside of combat, Resonance of Fate is a hardcore RPG, made for those who enjoy the grind. The world map sports a sparse, board game-style aesthetic, which works well since it heightens the tactical elements of the experience and ties into the combat.

Countless RPGs have flooded the market since titles like the original Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy popularised them during the 8-bit era, so if you're seeking one that puts an innovative spin on the genre's traditional values, look no further than this.
