10 Hidden Video Game Images You Weren't Supposed To See
4. Hidden Goomba - Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
Although Super Mario Sunshine will forever shine as one of the Italian plumber's all-time finest hours, the formula of the game is very different indeed from what you've come to expect of the Super Mario series.
Among these changes is the absence of the series' most iconic enemies, the goombas. In their place are extremely similar characters named Stus, who appear in multiple forms throughout the game.
So you can imagine the shock that gamers must have had when they noticed this shifty little character lurking under the map of Delfino Isle!
In Pinna Park, by greatly exploiting Mario's jumping mechanics, you may just find yourself beneath the level altogether. Angling the camera at just the right point in first-person view will reveal a 2D image of what looks like a classic, run-of-the-mill goomba.
What does this mean, then? Were goombas originally planned to feature in Super Mario Sunshine, only to be replaced with the Stus later on? Sure seems like it. It's too bad that this guy never made it beyond a discarded asset - and the fact he still lingers about for all the world to see just rubs it in even more.
