Not to be mistaken with games that are simply available on the Wii, like Super Smash Bros. or Sonic, the Wii's motion-based game series helped launch the console back in 2006, with frequent instalments being released over time to keep Nintendo's numbers ticking over.

A release title can make or break a console upon launch and there have been few more successful in the gaming industry than Wii Sports, putting it the same company as Halo and Super Mario 64, even surpassing them, sitting as the fourth-highest selling single game of all time.

The game helped elevate motion-simulation gaming, a concept that had struggled to take hold in the past through ventures like PlayStation's EyeToy years prior.

Wii Sports Resort was a strong follow up in the sporting category, even matching in sales another highlight of the series, Mario Kart Wii.

The novelty of the series has worn over time, but the impact and genuine hype around the first few years of release was like very few booms in the history of the industry.

Not only did the franchise help Nintendo back into the equation as a genuine industry leader after a few lean following the 64 console, but it helped shape a new vision of what a game can be and what developers can create in the future, even if it did just begin with a tennis or bat swing.
