10 Horror Video Games Dying To Be Remade
9. Manhunt
What was forgotten amidst the controversy surrounding Rockstar's Manhunt was that it was actually a good game. Atmospheric and challenging, there's definitely a current lack of the sort of stealth-based horror it offers.
Set in the grime-ridden cesspit of Carson City (interestingly in the same universe as Grand Theft Auto), James Earl Cash is taken from death row and ostensibly executed by lethal injection, though in fact this was staged.
Now, via an earpiece, 'The Director' (voiced by Brian Cox in a truly underrated performance in gaming) instructs Cash to hunt and murder numerous gang members and criminals stalking the city, all hooked up to cameras The Director uses to film these urban snuff films.
Suffice to say, the story is on the extreme side, as was the graphic content of the game's execution stealth kills, but Manhunt more than justifies this material, executing (pardon the pun) a truly original and tense stealth-horror experience.
Given the technical expertise that Rockstar have demonstrated since, a remake of Manhunt could stand as one of their crowning achievements; a more focused, powerful narrative experience than their huge sprawling worlds of late.
