10 Horror Video Games With Shocking Twist Endings

1. The Witch's House - The Witchy Switcheroo

Sinking city
GOODROID

Finishing strong we have this puzzle-based horror from 2012. The game begins as a young girl, Viola, wakes up in the middle of the woods. The only sign of civilisation around is a large house, which she must approach and enter- only to find herself locked inside.

Through finding various clues, you uncover that the house was inhabited by a witch named Ellen. Ellen was a sick child whose parents neglected her, so eventually she killed her parents and made a deal with a demon that transformed her into a witch. The demon promised to heal her of her sickness if she fed him enough souls.

After eventually gaining an item that allows you to burn through the thick rosebushes keeping you trapped in the forest, however on enacting this the true nature of your player-character is revealed. Prior to the start of the game, Ellen forced Viola to swap bodies with her, hence giving herself a vessel free of disease. Throughout the game, when playing as ‘Viola’ escaping the witch we were in reality playing as the witch inside Viola’s body, as Viola’s spirit inside the witch’s old vessel attempted to trap us in the house to get back her body.

In the end, Viola’s dad comes to rescue his daughter, completely unaware that the girl he is taking home is inhabited with the witch’s spirit, and that his real daughter (trapped in a sickly body) has been duped and left to die. It is a bit crushing because after the real Viola (stuck in the witch’s body) is not recognised by her own dad she can die of despair, but nobody could claim that it doesn’t make for a fantastic twist ending.
