7. The Sinking City - You Were Invited By An Evil Deity
Heading in for a bit of Lovecraftian horror now, we have The Sinking City. Our protagonist is Charles Winfield Reed, a private investigator who has been suffering with horrifying visions and nightmares ever since the war.
He receives an invitation from Johannes van der Berg, an intellectual in the town of Oakmont, to visit the town and uncover the cause behind his visions. Other people share the same ailment as him it seems, and most of them are in Oakmont. Eager to rid himself of his troubles, Reed goes along and, once there, is hired by a local to discover the cause of a serious flood that has caused havoc in the town.
As he uncovers the dark secrets of the town and those within it, it is revealed that the source of the flood isn’t just a result of poor city planning but rather an evil plot. Johannes van der Berg, the man who initially invited him, is revealed to be Hastur, a fellow of the monstrous entity Cthulhu. He invited Reed because his visions denote him as being one of the possible ‘chosen ones’ suitable for a ritual to reincarnate Cthulu.
What he had hoped was a place he could go to cure his ailments was instead a ploy to welcome in the apocalypse all along.
