Resident Evil 4, one of the greatest horror games ever made was originally released on the Nintendo GameCube before being ported to many systems but one other horror title released for the console is often forgotten about.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a psychological horror game which features an erratic, time jumping story that you need to piece together to form a coherent narrative timeline. The settings and characters include a Roman commander in ancient Persia, a priest during the period of inquisition and a hunter in the 1980s to name a few of the 12 available protagonists.

It does feature similar third person action combat to Resident Evil, yet it distinguishes itself with a sanity mechanic where the characters will begin to lose a grip on reality. When spotted by enemies, a sanity bar will decrease and the environment or in-game events will change in interesting ways to reflect this. Such effects include awkward camera angles, blood pouring from the walls or even sudden death.

Eternal Darkness even breaks the fourth wall with some sanity effects which simulate errors on the screen or threaten to delete your save files.

This game features a strong, ambitious story and innovative gameplay elements so it is a real shame it is not more widely remembered.
