10 Hotly Anticipated Open-World Games Coming In 2016

2. Horizon: Zero Dawn (PS4)

In a year that's promising a whole load more IPs than the last, Horizon: Zero Dawn stands out as one of the more intriguing offerings. Set in a refreshingly beautiful post-apocalyptic world in which nature and, errr, mechanised dinosaurs have reclaimed the earth, you control a hunter who wanders the world in search of metals and electrical components crucial to humanity's survival. The exact size of the world isn't known, but from what we've seen so far it looks like it'll be a verdant wasteland that in some ways looks prehistoric, but is also filled with otherworldly-looking vegetation and vibrant colours that make the game look quite hyperreal. The gameplay looks set to combine stealth and all-out action, as we've seen the protagonist Aloy laying explosive traps for herds of robotic beasts, taking on a giant robo T-Rex with a bow-and-arrow, and backstabbing some kind of bipedal dinobots. While developers Guerrilla (of Killzone fame) have talked about Horizon combining RPG elements with those of open-world adventures like Assassin's Creed, it looks very much to be angling more towards the latter, with small snippets like crafting thrown in to tick that RPG box. Whatever the case, it looks like one of the most original IPs coming in 2016.
