10 Huge Gaming Controversies That Rocked Sony PlayStation

5. Resistance: Fall Of Man 'Desecrating' Manchester Cathedral

Remember Resistance? For a time it was Sony's answer to Halo - at least in a "Let's shoot some aliens with hoo-ra dialogue"-sort of way - but following a trilogy of solid affairs and a couple of portable spin-offs, it's never returned to the front of any PlayStation sales pitch for years. Could that be down to the ridiculously accidental religious mix-up Sony got into back in 2007? Perhaps not, but it was a real humdinger all the same. With the game focussing on an alien invasion of Lil ol' England, there was one level set inside an accurately-modelled Manchester Cathedral - also known as one of the most respected and holiest places on earth thanks to being over 200 years old. The Church of England kicked up quite a stink saying that the game was 'desecrating' the holy structure and the land beneath it, to the point where the Prime Minister Tony Blair got involved to try and explain that with Resistance being a work of fiction, there was nothing he could do. In the end Sony apologised to the Church anyway, but not before they'd made headlines across the globe - catching a few extra controversy-fuelled sales in the process.
