8. O’Brian Removes The Mask - Days Gone

Set in a zombie-apocalyptic world, Days Gone follows bounty-hunter Deacon following his tragic separation from his wife. Tracking a government helicopter, he meets O’Brian, a hazmat-suited researcher, who offers information on her whereabouts in exchange for Deacon’s help with research on the zombies (called Freakers). After a series of impressive but predictable plot points Deacon is reunited with his wife and the two resume their lives together in this apocalyptic hell hole.

Players who made the effort to 100% the game were treated to a secret final mission where O’Brian makes contact once again, warning that the Freakers are mutating. He removes his hazmat mask to reveal that he is in fact... an evolved Freaker. As Deacon recoils in shock, O’Brian remarks that the government is aware of the latest mutation, and ominously declares, "They’re coming."

Sadly, the most interesting moment in the whole franchise would prove to be the last, as an April 2021 article revealed a planned sequel was rejected due to the game’s poor critical reception. We can add this one to the pile of twists that never went anywhere.
