10 Huge Gaming Moments That Didn't Matter At All

7. The Circular Saw - Until Dawn

An early PS4 title, Until Dawn’s marketing material leaned heavily on its use of butterfly effect narrative, and how the choices made during this love letter to cabin-in-the-woods horror movies would change the story for better or worse. As any dungeon master in a D&D game will tell you though, sometimes you do have to corral people in the right direction.

A year after the supposed deaths of twins Hannah and Beth, their brother Josh invites everyone who was there (and thus semi-responsible) back to the cabin where it all happened. Up in the mountains, they soon find themselves at the mercy of a crazed psychopath in a mask, and some cannibalistic wendigos.

One sequence sees nice-boy character Chris find his crush Ashley and his best mate Josh both tied up, between them a circular saw. Chris is given the choice of selecting which of them gets chopped. It's incredibly hard to choose, but it turns out that whichever way the player goes the blade will still eviscerate Josh.

It’s later revealed that Josh’s ‘death’ was nothing but a bit of Hollywood trickery, and that he was the masked man all along, torturing his friends as revenge for his sisters. A dick move on the parts of both Josh and the developers; not only did you have no choice of the victim in the first place, but the choice made for you wasn’t even a victim at all.
