10 Huge Video Game Franchises That Are Doomed To Fail
7. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Ubisoft is so, so desperately trying to make fetch happen with the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon franchise, which while storming back to life with 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands has struggled to make players care since.
2019's Ghost Recon Breakpoint received wildly mixed reviews for its dull open world mission design and gameplay, leading to sales which Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemont deemed "disappointing."
Ubisoft then announced the next entry into the series, a free-to-play live-service battle royale game, Ghost Recon Frontline.
Fan reaction to the reveal trailer was overwhelmingly negative, citing the utter cynicism with which Ubisoft was clearly trying to cash-in on current gaming trends without actually delivering a quality, worthwhile Ghost Recon game.
In response to this, Ubisoft cancelled Frontline's planned Alpha test and delayed the game "indefinitely" while they attempted to address players' concerns.
But ultimately it's clear that Ubisoft is just chasing the gravy train here and trying to compensate for Breakpoint's failure by milking battle royale and live-service frameworks for every drop they're worth.
This is the sort of cynical business mindset that makes fanbases dry up, as while nobody will need to pay to play Frontline, that doesn't mean it'll convince fans to fork out for the inevitable microtransactions.
