10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)

1. Doom 3

Doom Eternal
Id Software

After a long absence from the industry, it was a heart-warming success story that Doom’s 2016 relaunch and subsequent sequel Eternal were universally praised.

However, controversies have begun to swirl around the soundtrack for the second game that might have a serious impact on its future. There’s a lot of accusations between id Software’s Marty Stratton and Doom guitar smith Mick Gordon about their working agreements, pay disputes and so on that put the future of the franchise in doubt.

You might think that losing a composer shouldn’t have quite that level of ramifications but the soundtracks for the recent Doom outings have been a huge contributing factor to their success. The juddering combination of metal and glitch-hop amps up the momentum-based gameplay and adds so much to the intensity, whether you’re doing the demon slaying or being the slain.

Without Gordon’s work, the games would’ve been far lesser.

Moreover, this online war of statements has made the whole situation exceptionally muddy. Whatever the level of truth to either side’s claims, it’s not a good look for Bethesda and id Software. Doom Eternal launched two years ago and in that time we’ve heard nary a whisper about a follow-up.

Doom, as a franchise, will never die but it may have to mutate once more to survive.
