10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)
2. Bloodborne 2
Whilst the Dark Souls trilogy might be the purest example of FromSoftware’s style, Bloodborne caught the imagination of many that much more. With its dark fantasy vibe and amazing monster designs, Bloodborne screams for wider recognition.
Famously, auteur Hidetaka Miyazaki passed on directing duties for the sequel to Dark Souls to work on other projects but did return to the franchise for the third game. This marks the only direct sequel he’s ever made. Furthermore, it makes Dark Souls the only IP that FromSoftware has sequelised in the last decade and a half.
From the off-set this already makes things a pretty unlikely situation for fans of Yharnam but Miyazaki spelt out rather precisely in a GameSpot interview in 2016:
“I'm not thinking about making any sequels or spin-offs. That applies to Bloodborne as well.”
Dark Souls remains an outlier in this way but if FromSoftware was going to be convinced to craft a sequel of any kind it would undoubtedly be for the sea change that was Elden Ring. For the Soulsborne style, it transformed the formula by taking it out into the open-world. For the industry, Elden Ring was without a doubt the biggest game of 2022.
If you’re not really a Bloodborne fan and instead are waiting to hear about more from Sekiro, you can pretty much reread this entry with Sekiro in mind instead for all the same (heartbreaking) reasons.
