10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)
9. Oddworld 3
Once one of the many recognisable and promising faces of the future of PlayStation, Abe and his merry band of weirdo aliens became, for a time, little more than nostalgia and a sign of squandered potential.
Despite praise from most who played them, both Munch’s Odyssey and Stranger’s Wrath failed to garner much sales success. Thankfully, Just Add Water’s remake of the original Abe’s Odyssey was able to kickstart what the company referred to as the “Oddworld Quintology”.
Lorne Lanning, co-founder of Oddworld Inhabitants and general face of the brand, was always keen to share his excitement about building upon the series. Many great Oddworld proposals, including a canned strategy title called Hand of Odd, have been teased because of Lanning’s upfront nature.
In May 2021, after the success of Oddworld: SoulStorm, Lanning said that he had ideas for the follow-up but didn’t want to talk about them because a “third game hadn’t even been financed”.
That right there is a worrying sign for a proposed series of five titles, especially considering SoulStorm’s protracted development and multiple delays surely would have affected the game’s final budget. Considering that financial troubles within the industry was the reason that Oddworld Inhabitants shut their doors back in 2005 and left the industry for a long time… it’s not looking good.
