10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)

8. Half-Life 3

It can’t be a list of long awaited video game sequels without Half-Life 3. It’s almost too obvious. That being said, despite the neverending wait, fans of the world of Black Mesa got closer to hope than ever before in 2020.

After 13 years of silence since Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Valve shocked the world by announcing a VR-exclusive spin-off. Some argued that Half-Life: Alyx was a gimmicky direction for the series to take after so much time away. However, most fans were just excited that there was any new life being breathed into Half-Life at all.

The true follow-up to Half-Life 2 has been infamously delayed due to the studio never settling on a direction for its gameplay nor its story after its famous shocking cliffhanger.

By setting Alyx between the events of Half-Life and its sequel, Valve were able to avoid digging themselves out of that hole and continue their trend of never making games that end in “3”.

Reviews for Alyx itself were incredibly strong so, if anything, it seems like this VR experiment might wind up getting a follow-up long before Gordon Freeman’s mainline adventure. At the very least this means the immortal “Half-Life 3 confirmed” memes can continue… but at what cost?
