10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)
6. The Evil Within 3
The original The Evil Within was a chance for survival horror maestro Shinji Mikami to try his hand at a fresh palette. He had regretted the more action-heavy direction that the genre had gone in since his time working on Resident Evil 4, and PsychoBreak, as it’s known in Japan, was his attempt to restore balance.
A new IP is always a gamble but largely The Evil Within paid off. It wasn’t without its faults but it caught enough interest that a sequel was greenlit and delivered three years later.
The Evil Within 2, almost expertly, improved on the first in every way, including a pseudo open world and a 15-hour campaign stuffed with spooks and frights. With Mikami in the producer chair, it allowed new director John Johanas and his team to really push the franchise forward instead of being a more straight-forward follow-up.
However, Mikami is famously not a fan of sequels, having only ever directed one in his entire career (the aforementioned Resi 4) which might be one contributing factor to why the studio’s most recent project became a new IP. Despite starting out as The Evil Within 3, the final product was Ghostwire Tokyo, which released earlier this year to positive reviews, leaving The Evil Within in the figurative dark for around five years now.
