10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)

5. Star Wars Battlefront 3

In terms of video games notoriously cancelled late into development, you don’t get many as disappointing as Star Wars Battlefront 3 for the PS2.

However, after years of laying dormant, the franchise got a new lease on life in 2015 when EA Games partnered with famed Battlefield franchise developers DICE. With the great difference in era there were major changes to the gameplay, of course, but the core principle of taking part in some of the most important battles in the galaxy far, far away remained the same.

Despite issues, and massive microtransactions controversy (what do you expect, it’s Electronic Arts), both 2015’s Battlefront and its 2017 sequel were solid multiplayer shooters, as was to be expected out of DICE. Better yet, the beautiful visuals and brilliant sound made it the closest players would get to actually being in the middle of a Rebel Alliance vs Empire blaster battle.

Would this relaunch, at least, make it to a third entry?

Insider reports in 2021 said that EA had butted heads with Disney over the expensive licensing for Star Wars and things got even more unsure when there was a changeover in management. In December 2021, EA announced that Ripple Effect Studios (the former DICE LA) would handle what was described as "new experiences" in the Battlefront series.

Meaning, whilst the next game might bear the name, it could be very different indeed.
