10 Hugely Important Video Games Kids Today Can Never Fully Appreciate
10. Gears Of War
When Gears of War hit the scene in 2006, it changed third-person shooters forever. Featuring an incredibly smooth cover-based system, the Microsoft exclusive completely revitalised the flagging genre, laying down the base template for everything that would come after. However, because more or less every other third person shooter from then on out decided to mimic Epic Games' finely-tuned movement system, that initial spark of innovation is lost going back to the game all these years later. In fact, the lack of allure is perhaps most evident in the upcoming HD re-release of the original title, because without the idea of experiencing your first time, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition simply can't recapture the same magic that made the 2006 release so special. At this point, we've simply seen the trick repeated too many times. While the campaign still holds up to this day and the multiplayer is still as intense as ever, you just don't get the same sense that you're playing through a piece of game-changing history when blowing through hordes in 2015.
