10 Hugely Loveable Gaming Bosses We Didn't Want To Kill

4. Liquid Ocelot - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

Ever since the first Metal Gear Solid, we'd been waiting for a chance to fight Revolver Ocelot again and take him down once and for all, after defeating him in that game's opening boss fight. Throughout the four main MGS games, Ocelot has been Snake's most slippery combatant, constantly evading capture and/or death, but always rearing his head up just when we think he might disappear for good. In the prequel that was Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, he also appeared as the outrageously entertaining, hand-gesturing Major Ocelot, proving to be a thorn in Big Boss' side from time to time. One of the most pivotal moments in his character history occurred during MGS2, when the Liquid Snake persona appeared to take over Ocelot by way of an arm he had transplanted from Liquid's corpse after having his own sliced off by the Cyborg Ninja in the first game. Now dubbed Liquid Ocelot, he re-appeared in MGS4 as the primary antagonist, plotting to take down the Patriots and spark an all-out world war. At the end of the game, a half-dead Snake has a final fight against Ocelot atop Outer Haven, a gorgeous, cinematic all-timer which inevitably results in Ocelot being beaten to death, or so we think. The game's epilogue reveals that Ocelot actually died as a result of the new FOXDIE Snake was infected with, as well as the fact that Ocelot was not really "possessed" by Liquid's arm as previously thought: this was merely a deception to trick The Patriots and make it easier for him to destroy them. Though Ocelot was previously thought to be a black-and-white villain, MGS4 makes his motives considerably more morally ambiguous, and while he could never be said to be a good guy, his efforts to realise Big Boss' dream make him quite difficult to hate. That and he's such an entertaining character, what with his gravelly voice and much like Wesker, his long-standing status as the series' overarching, go-to bad guy.
