10 Iconic Video Game Influences You'll Find In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Ever since Far Cry 2 enemy checkpoints have been a staple of the Far Cry series: 3, 4, Blood Dragon and Primal have all had them in various guises. Checkpoints are packed with enemies that spot you from a mile off and take you down with well-placed bullets and decent flanking tactics. Spotting them using a camera or a monocular was key. Far Cry 2 also had weapons that would jam up; in practice this meant hamming a button to unjam it, but the mechanic was still a hassle. It was dropped for later installments.

In a similar way, Zelda: Breath of the Wild is not all about the Master Sword. At least not at first. Zelda: BOTW is all about breakable weapons that have to be collected, hoarded, rotated and swapped out depending on whether you've found a treasure chest or pillaged from an enemy encampment. Spears, swords, bows, clubs and axes are all part of your arsenal and you cannot simply rely on one weapon to get the job done. Being flexible and adaptable is part and parcel of your success in combat for Breath of the Wild. Encounters are exciting and varied. It feels like anything can happen in combat (and, without offering spoilers, it often does).

Finally, there's the blood moon. Keep an eye out for the blood moon!
