10 Idiotic Moral Panics Caused By Awesome Video Games

3. Resident Evil 5 - Guess Why?

Resident Evil 5, which has a love/hate relationship with most fans of the games, takes place in a rural area in West Africa. The primary protagonists are members of the B.S.A.A. anti-biowarfare group: Chris Redfield, the gentleman in the picture above who is in the unfortunate clutches of a parasite infected Majini, and Sheva Alomar, a fair-skinned African woman who partners with him throughout the game. For some reason, critics immediately saw this and screamed RACISM! *sigh* I like Resident Evil. I like killing zombies. I like games that scare me (something neither of the two most recent Resident Evil Games was able to do). However... in the first FOUR main storyline games, and the rest of the spinoffs, the primary ethnicity of the people you kill are caucasian. In fact, zombies of ethnic descent aren't too common in any of the predecessors - hell, your partner in the game (and despite some A.I. flaws, Sheva is f*cking awesome) is black! Which leads me to this: if killing legions of Spanish, Russian, and American zombies is no big deal, why then is it suddenly a misstep to kill infected Africans in a game that takes place in Africa? You don't know? Me either.
