10 Images That Completely Killed The Magic Of Gaming
10. "Press Y For Micro-transactions" - Dead Space 3
Dead Space 3 is a perfect example of the direction in which many AAA gaming projects are heading: it's all about the bottom line and less about crafting a game that the core fanbase wants to play. Nevertheless, one of the game's more interesting additions was that of crafting, whereby you can build bigger and better weapons by collecting scraps littered around the map. Sounds cool, right? Well, if you've not got enough resources to build a particular weapon, the game will let you know this, which seems fair enough...but plastered below this message is a prompt to open the Downloadable Content menu. What's the big deal, you ask? This is a more diplomatic way of saying "press Y to buy some more resources if you're too lazy to play the game properly", as the game introduced micro-transactions to the Dead Space franchise, allowing players to purchase resources using their actual, hard-earned money. Now, if people are silly enough to do this, that's on them, right? Perhaps, but just seeing this so cravenly thrust into the game reminds us that we're playing a commodity, a product, rather than a (potentially) great game.
