10 Images That Completely Killed The Magic Of Gaming
9. The Three Colours - Mass Effect 3
No video game has been more maligned for its climax than Mass Effect 3, which promised players that their decisions throughout the franchise would resolve in an epic, satisfying payoff that put paid to these choices. In the end, it came down to a choice of three colours which gave players three different, concrete endings that didn't really appear to have much to do with what the player had done in the previous two games. After being promised such an ambitious finale, this "pick an ending" close felt lazy and totally effortless. BioWare sold us on the wonderful idea that our adventure was our own, and after losing ourselves in three mostly great games, to see the veneer pulled back so violently at the eleventh hour understandably left a horrible taste in most gamers' mouths. What should have been a fluid climax ultimately came down to picking A, B or C and hoping for the best, and that's not the reason fans fell madly in love with these games in the first place. BioWare did in fairness release an Extended Cut to clarify the endings, but it was just too little, too late.
