Earlier, it was said that some of the best moments in gaming come because they're familiar. The first stage from Mario's (original) adventure to save the princess is indicative of that. Bashing the little plumber's head against that brick, grabbing the handy mushroom and squashing that first Goomba is ageless fun.

The level introduces players to Mario's universe without the need of a pesky hand-holding tutorial or a slew of text pop-ups. It's straightforward entertainment that takes just a few minutes, has an instantly-recognisable tune backing it up and kicks off the Super Mario franchise with serious gusto.

Just don't die on that first Goomba. The little blighter gets you from time-to-time.
