Admit it, you knew this was coming at some point.

No list looking at the most immortal video game moments of all time would be complete without Sega's little blue mascot. Standing still as he taps one of those red sneakers on the grassy turf and wonders why the player isn't hurtling him forwards at a million miles per hour, Sonic displays more personality than most other gaming icons.

Green Hill Zone is a haven for the senses. Colours burst out of every pixel, the simple ring-based health mechanic is easy to grasp and the soundtrack is classic 16-bit Mega Drive/Genesis. OK, so "blast processing" may have been a marketing slogan, but the first Sonic The Hedgehog level gamers were exposed to sold it brilliantly.

When playing, you'll want to go fast. Ignoring rings (and even enemies) in favour of speed becomes a way of life in Sonic. Green Hill Zone, with those wide-open areas and lengthy straights, encourages movement.

This is the way Sonic is supposed to be, and it'll be replayed from now until the end of time.
