10 Important Video Game Plot Points That Were Abandoned

2. Heavy Rain - Ethan's Blackouts

Ethan Mars is one of the primary characters in the PS3 game, Heavy Rain. A grieving father, he then has to go through the nightmare of losing another child when his son, Shaun, is kidnapped by the Origami Killer. But during the early parts of the game, it seems like Ethan has a secret side.

The character often experiences blackouts and wakes up in places he's never been before. This leads to curious players speculating whether Ethan may have a different personality that could be the Origami Killer himself. The problem is that by the end of the game, the identity of the culprit is not Ethan and his blackouts never return to the main story ever again.

This plot thread was explained in one of the game's bonus documentaries detailing Heavy Rain's deleted scenes. The video explains that Ethan was supposed to have formed a psychic connection with the Origami Killer during the death of his son, which allowed him access to the culprit's mind.

Quantic Dream cut these partially animated scenes because the explanation would have added a paranormal element to the game. But by removing these segments, Ethan's blackouts end up being pointless.
