10 Impossible Video Game Boss Battles That Totally Broke You
4. Giygas (Earthbound)
Easily one of the most loveable and critically-adored RPGs of all time, the almost Stranger Things-like Earthbound finds its nearest gameplay and tone comparisons in 2015 masterwork Undertale, but where the latter was an easy ride from start to finish, Earthbound ends on a brutally unforgiving boss, Giygas.
Built to literally be invulnerable unless you use the Prayer ability, Giygas' multiple status effects and party-attacks can decimate all but the most prepared teams. The fight is looong too, taking a good 20/30 minutes of dealing consistent damage in return, and being sure to counter any inflicted effects like freeze with the appropriate items.
Though actually overcoming such a mountain of cerebral challenge is worthwhile and rewarding, you can totally argue that "war of attrition"-style showdowns like this contributed to why the turn-based RPG model died off across the 2000s.
