The target of the first quest, the player is tasked with finding and killing the cleaver-wielding demon, found on just the second floor of the massive dungeon that comprises the entirety of the original Diablo. In this case, you can be forgiven for underestimating The Butcher, as the game drastically undersells him. It takes mere minutes to arrive at this point in the game. For crying out loud, it's a level 2 quest!

When you find him in a tiny little room full of blood and human body parts, you'll quickly realize that it's not REALLY a level 2 quest. Upon opening the door he'll utter his famous catchphrase and beeline straight for you, likely killing you instantly.

Not only is The Butcher super strong, he's also super fast, making it impossible to kite him with arrows or magic. There is no running from The Butcher. There is only grinding until you can face him mano a mano.

Or you could exploit some design flaws. The Butcher's only weakness? He can't open doors.
