10 Incredible Bosses In Terrible Video Games
2. Shenmue III - Lan Di
Shenmue III, the highest crowd funded game ever, is... disappointing. Let's not beat around the push: after twenty years, the formula hadn't moved with the times. Defenders will say that's a good thing, everyone else isn't that daft.
What it does do right, however, is establish the revenge motive set out in the first one. Ryo Hazuki, in the politest terms, gets his ass handed to him in the first game by Lan Di. Then, because Shenmue plays the long game (quite literally), he's absent until the third game.
So naturally, after this long a wait, it better not be a disappointment of a fight. Y'know, much like everything else in the game is.
Fortunately, the fight delivers. Putting everything Ryo's learnt over three games, depending on your jump in point, the kung fu battle is impressive. Well, once Lan Di's henchmen are out of the way first.
The only drawback is that there's no conclusion to the fight as, in typical fashion, Shenmue III ends on an open note. Given the reception, we may not see a fourth title.
But at least players got to take out some frustration on the man who killed Ryo's father.
