Celeste is one of several 2D side-scrollers on this list, and it also may be the most brutal difficulty-wise. Think of it as Super Meat Boy but in a fully inter-connected world. Formerly a product of a four-day game jam, the game has been expanded beyond its roots, blossoming into an effectively-crafted platformer with gorgeous art and visuals.

However, don't let the bright vibrant landscapes fool you, as this is not a game for the faint of heart. Celeste draws you in with nostalgic, wonderfully-composed 8-bit music, only to then put you in a jump section where spikes are everywhere and you've got to get across in one attempt or you die. The developers set high expectations for their players, and don't let you get off easy. Much like other titles that relish the thrill of a good challenge, it's better for it.

This Game of the Year nominee earned a place alongside much more high-profile titles because, even with a tiny development team, so much heart and charm is packed into Celeste that it's impossible not to keep on chugging, even during its most difficult moments.
