Ninja Gaiden II is an excellent hack-and-slash experience which picked up right where Ninja Gaiden left off.

In fact, fans and critics alike criticized Ninja Gaiden II for being too similar to its predecessor, but in defense of the developers at Team Ninja, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There were some fun additions: a system in which dismemberment slows enemies but enables them to use suicide tactics to take the player out, adding an unexpected difficulty spike just when you're at your most confident, and some fine-tuning of the combat system which makes it all feel a little more fluid.

It's a great game, and a genuine challenge, but in spite of its 81% score on Metacritic, it wasn't quite able to live up to its predecessor's success, and as a result is often forgotten.

But for fans of the action-adventure genre, Ninja Gaiden II is an absolute essential for your collection.
