4. Revali's Gale (Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild)

Nintendo's masterpiece The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is such a triumph because, instead of asking the player to cross off an arbitrary laundry list of objectives, it has just one: become a hero. After a brief mandated tutorial plateau, Link is literally launched into the open expanses of Hyrule, and told to master the world, not through a series of progression checks and skill trees, but a comprehensive and deep understanding of how the world works.

Over time, you'll learn how to survive out in the often unforgiving wild, gradually conquering the terrain as you build up your stamina and your hearts. That insurmountable peak yonder will eventually have the Hylian flag planted on it.

Or you could just point your paraglider in the direction of Rito Village, unblight a giant mechanical eagle, and for your troubles earn the gift of the champion Revali: a summonable updraft that'll shoot Link several feet into the air, allowing him to easily vault over even the land's steepest bluffs. Revali's Gale is such a potent cheat code that it can be used to entirely skip the gauntlet of Ganon's castle. Breath of the Mild, more like.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
