From one divine wind to another. The first RPG-cum-platform entry in the vampire-vanquishing Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night, allowed protagonist Alucard to swap out a range of demon-killing weapons, the most lethal of which was the wonderfully named Valmanway (called the equally wonderful 'Crissaegrim' in the English translation). The 'blessed wind' blade's range goes from head to foot, and swings four times per second. Not only that, but it's a single-handed sword, meaning the player can equip two at once. This renders the dhampir Alucard not just undead, but unkillable.

A weapon that creates more balancing issues than an elephant on a tightrope is perhaps not ideal, then, but rather than nix it, Koji Igarashi instead created a loving tribute in his faithful spiritual sequel, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The Rhava Velar, whilst not having quite as cool a name, is just as ridiculously OP as its Tolkien-esque inspiration. Once you've got one in your scabbard, nothing else is allowed to live.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
