10 Incredibly Depressing Video Game Stories From 2014

10. #GamerGate

Still an ongoing debate, the GamerGate hashtag was supposed to represent a movement of people dedicated to discussing and dissecting the ethics of video game journalism. Y'know like how certain outlets may give big-budget titles higher scores regardless of their actual worth for the sake of an exclusive scoop, or the notion of a reviewer backing projects themselves through Kickstarter that they're then supposed to objectively review. Things like that. What it's turned into though, thanks to the origins of the movement stemming from a scandal involving a female game developer and her intimate personal relationship with several members of the games media, is an excuse for a small number of people using the tag to target other females in the industry in increasingly vile ways. Regardless of what the movement is supposed to stand for overall, there's been too many death and sexually violent threats - the most recent being an anonymous email purporting to a mass shooting occurring if prominent feminist Anita Sarkeesian delivered a speech - that the water is far too muddied for anything worthwhile to be taken away, let alone seen.
