10 Industry-Defining Video Games That Are Nowhere To Be Seen

2. Half-Life

If Wolfenstein 3D is seen as the origin of the FPS game then Half-Life's release was seen as the equivalent of an Industrial Revolution in the FPS genre. Half-Life innovated the FPS landscape by infusing an unparalleled level of immersive gaming and interactive video game environments with one of the most iconic silent protagonists ever created. After such a landmark first game, Valve went away for a few years and reemerged with the even-better Half-Life 2. Everything from the graphics, the gameplay, the technology used, the setting and the characters were deemed to be an improvement from the first Half-Life. Rather than make fans wait years for a big sequel, Valve decided to release the sequel to Half-Life 2 in the form of annual 'episodes' which worked very well indeed. Right up until Half-Life 2: Episode 2 was released and then, well, you know how the story has played out so far - that being absolutely nothing more. Zilch. Nada. What's more to be said about the mythical Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or Half-Life 3 that already hasn't been said? Throw us a bone here Valve, it's been eight years and there is only so much Portal and Dota 2 that can quell the need for the next Half-Life.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
