10 Infuriating Video Game Puzzles Fans Hated
4. L.A. Noire - Westlake Tar Pits
Despite its open world nature and cover-based shootouts, L.A. Noire is largely a puzzle game. Granted, it's mostly about grisly murders and such, but therein lies the puzzle element. Finding clues, deciphering lies and truths, they're all primary focus here.
Which is why the immersion is somewhat dented a bit when it comes to the Black Dahlia murder cases. The individual cases themselves are great, but it's the final chapter of the Homicide desk that causes ire.
Tasked with working out riddles that lead to a merry chase around the city, the nadir of this is the tar pits clue. In terms of gameplay, it's no different than climbing fountains or the Hall of Records chandelier.
At least they were interesting. This, however, isn't.
You have to navigate sunken platforms in the tar, where putting a foot wrong can see Phelps meet a sticky demise. It's not so bad now in the time of HD remasters and brightness, but on release it was sometimes hard to distinguish tar and path.
So you can imagine how frustrating it'd be getting near the end to misstep and sink.
