Nobody ever achieves greatness on a first draft, and if they say they have, they're a liar. Even this list article will go through about three different drafts before it goes live - and it still won't be any good. You can imagine then just how difficult, and just how many drafts are needed, to create an amazing video game that potentially needs to run for hundreds of hours.

However, new drafts aren't simply made to eliminate things that didn't work the first time around. New creatives might come on board and implement their ideas, the game might be focus and play tested and changed in response to feedback, or a specific beat or feature might be altered because the devs have been staring at it for too long and have lost all perspective.

Consequently, both good and bad things can be lost in the drafting process, and it's resulted in a whole bunch of sequels over the years that have massively changed during development. Each one of the following iterations failed to see the light of day, but in some cases, these original ideas might have been even better than what we got.
