10 Insanely Awful Video Games In Famous Franchises
9. Super Mario Bros. Special
Truly living up to its name, the Super Mario Bros port that came out for the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1 computers is really something to marvel at with a curiosity of fascination and disgust. It was developed by Hudson Soft, who went on to make solid games like Bomberman and the Mario Party series, but were presumably banned from making a Mario platformer ever again after this. The low horsepower of both computers meant that this version of Mario couldn't handle things like a scrolling screen, so each time you hit the right edge of the screen, everything would turn black for a couple of seconds while the next 'segment' of the level loaded. It would also seem that the colour white was too much to ask for, giving the text, clouds and Fire Mario's outfit a putrid yellow tint - as if the game was dying of liver failure. Despite the fact that it was borderline playable, this version of Mario actually had several exclusive features, such as the Mario Hammer from Donkey Kong and various other nifty power-ups. Yes, unbelievably, there were actual in-game incentives to play this over other Mario games. I don't know. Maybe there's a certain novelty to its out-of-tune soundtrack, sickly appearance and flickering Mario model? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0HQOKmAPRA
