What game companies tend to forget is that the mark of a truly insanely long open-world game is not size, but density. Something Sega has long since mastered with the Yakuza games, which had its magnum opus with Like A Dragon.

While Like a Dragon has precisely two more open-world maps than is typically seen in your average yakuza adventure, even with them combined, Like a Dragon's world is dwarfed by even the smallest open-world on this list. And yet you will struggle to find one with more to do.

The story mode isn't even all that long, but you don't play Yakuza for the main story, everyone knows that. You play it for the sidequests, and those add easily another 100 hours to this game. But what sets it apart from previous entries was the sheer, capital-V Variety in the sidequests. With other games like GTA V, even when you're doing something different, you're always going to be shooting someone at some point.

Meanwhile, with Like a Dragon, you could go hours without fighting someone depending on what sidequests you go for, because you'll be too busy playing mahjong, racing go-karts, and dominating the Japanese economy.

You'll find yourself finishing the game out of sheer desire to see what strange tangent the game will go on next.
