10 Intense Video Game Multiplayer Modes You Won't Survive
4. Factions - The Last Of Us
Most of the praise for The Last of Us rightly centres on its seminal single-player story, but what often gets lost in the weeds is just how good its multiplayer offering was as well. Initially written off as nothing more than a tacked-on addition to add another bullet point to the back of the box, players who gave it a chance quickly realised it was actually an ambitious game of survival just as intense as the one found in the main story.
No matter what game mode you were playing, everything you did in Factions contributed to the wider survival cause. Kills and scavenging netted you resources which were contextualised by a meta game that saw you overseeing a camp of people and trying to keep them alive by reliably doing well in multiplayer. Adding an extra twist, you could import your Facebook friends list into this mode, so the people in your camp bore the name of your real-life pals, which made things even more tragic when you inevitably lost a few along the way.
Naughty Dog's brand of survivalist, scrappy combat already made matches stressful enough, but having to account for your wider responsibilities made every single life count, as you weren't only thinking about the leaderboard, but the mouths relying on you at home.
