10 Interesting But Underused Creatures In Dungeons And Dragons
5. Slaad
There are many strange and varied creatures in the multiple worlds of Dungeons and Dragons. From your usual fantasy elves and dwarfs, to powerful beings that resemble floating eyeballs. However, if you want a race that isn’t often used and will really crank up the strangeness factor, then look no further than the Slaad. Resembling giant humanoid toad-like creatures, these strange beings are natives to the plane of Limbo. An area that is constantly shifting and full of chaos. this race reflects there homeland.
There are many different variations in this race, usually varying by size and colour. All Slaad have telepathic abilities, this allows them to bypass language barriers when conversing with other creatures. This ability is innate in all of the species. Others become more attuned to magic, being able to polymorph and shapechange.
One of the things that make the Slaad so horrifically interesting, is there various reproduction cycles. While the different coloured Slaad represent various types, they all spawn from the same base species. Red Slaad lay their eggs beneath a victim’s skin, the eggs then hatch into blue tadpoles. These little guys use the host as nourishment and eat them from within, they eventually come out as fully grown blue Slaad. The blue Slaad then infect other beings, so that they may turn into red Slaad. This allows the cycle to continue.
Multiple types develop from red and blue Slaad depending on their age and magical abilities, but this horrific reproduction is a thing of nightmares. I hope your party doesn’t get too close.
